Biodegradable polyurethane urea fibres support natural healing process

Recent research has focused on new approaches to healing injured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). The aim is to develop an artificial ligament which can offer a scafford for fibroblasts to form new collagen and give support. Polyurethane urea (PUUR) has been found to have suitable mechanical properties and degradation rates, and biocompatibility has been successfully tested on rabbits. PUUR is produced in a wet-spinning process and the ligaments manufactured on a narrow loom.
