Mechanical damage to cottonseed adversely affects its reproduction performance. An overview of the harvest and post-harvest operations that affect cottonseed quality addresses mechanical damage, including damage resulting from harvesting, ginning, mechanical delinting, handling, and conveying; mechanical properties of the cottonseed coat; conveying; mechanical properties of the cottonseed coat; consequences of mechanical damage; delinting, including flame delinting, acid delinting, and acid delinted versus mechanically delinted seed; conditioning; storage; seed quality, including evaluation of seed quality and dormancy; and improving seed quality. Proper selection and adjustment of equipment, better facility design, improved operational management, and a rigorous quality assurance program can minimize the quality losses attributable to mechanical harvesting and subsequent procedures.
