Kenaf is a valuable rotation crop that provides natural weed suppression, nitrogen fixation, and erosin control. Kenaf is a good rotation crop for soybean cyst nematode infested fields, but it is susceptible to other nematode infested fields, but it is susceptible to other nematode species, especially root knot nematodes. Kenaf yields best on high moisture holding soils, but most soils produce an adequate yield if planted by the middle of May. Producers can plant kenaf anytime after frost, but planting in late June or early July can result in lower yields. Kenaf needs approximately 43-45 days after pollination to mature and may grow 8-20 feet in three months. Seeding depth is 0.5-1.0 inch. Kenaf fiber sells for $0.20-$0.25 per pound. Finding a buyer before planting is important. Kenaf is used for livestock bedding and feed, paper, particleboard, furniture stuffing, and cordage.
