The belief that high molecular weight, low-sulfur protein with acidic characteristics is completely alpha-crystalline material originating from microfibrils, and that low molecular weight, high-sulfur protein with basic characteristics is amorphous and isotropic coming from the highly crosslinked matrix of wool is discussed. Circumstantial evidence provided by chemical and physical studies seem to support the case for a two-phase structure within the cortex of the wool fiber. 41 refs.
