The jute industry has experienced a decline in its traditional markets during the past 30 years. Demand stagnated at slightly above three million metric tons during the 1960s, recovered slightly during the 1970s, and then grew to 3.6 million metric tons during the 1980s, in tandem with the general growth of the global economy. As economic growth slackened at the end of the decade, however, jute demand fell back to around 3 million metric tons. Jute's traditional end uses--sacking, carpet backing, and hessian for home furnishings and packaging--have declined. Hope lies in developing jute intermediate bulk containers to compete with polypropylene containers. Jute blends with other fibers and jute nonwovens also hold promise.
