The effect of cotton fiber quality on performance during ring, open end, and air-jet spinning is reviewed. Systems that involve roller drafting require long fibers of consistent length. Open end systems are less sensitive to length variation but need finer fibers with increased strength. In the United States, the trend toward increasing yield by growing cotton that is coarse has to be reversed to respond to the needs of these spinning processes. Contamination is another problem that has major impact on spinning.
