Bleached cellulose fibers from softwood were grafted with the following acrylic monomers: methyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, allyl acrylate, allyl methacrylate, butyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, and crotyl acrylate. Manganese 3+ initiator was used as a pyrophosphate complex in acid aqueous medium at 30 degrees Centigrade. The groups at the chain ends and 2.3 diols along the chains. Studies of the grafting reaction indicated that the reaction started at the fiber surface and proceeded gradually into the fiber wall. 8 refs.
