Two kinds of PVA supports, super fine fibers (SFF) and PVA bearing styrylpyridiium group (PVA-SbQ), were developed to immobilize biocatalysts. The SFF bound biocatalysts using electrostatic interaction, whereas the PVA-SbQ entrapped biocatalysts using visible light irradiation. The PVA-SbQ was further treated to make the enzymes entrapped in the polymer matrix more active. Glucose oxidase and invertase were immobilized on SFF, and their thermal stability was tested. Filter papers made with SFF were used to make a small-sized reactor. A braid of SFF was wound around a perforated tube so that liquids could pass through, and a new bioreactor system was developed to evaluate support materials.
