A commercial-scale kenaf production and separation facility constructed in Mississippi is the first of its kind in the world. The aim of this installation is to determine whether kenaf can be used as a substitute for wood in a pulp mill. The kenaf fibers are separated into long and short fibers. The commercial development of a kenaf-based pulp and paper industry depends on confirming the feasibility of agricultural production and fiber processing; pulping of the kenaf fiber; the development of range of pulp and paper products; and market development for the product range. Mill location and capacity will determine the economics production. 10 refs.
