Courtauld's Tencel fiber, which is a cellulosic fiber aimed at the clothing sector, is made by using a production process that is significantly cleaner than traditional cellulosic fiber production methods. Water is the only major effluent resulting from the solvent spinning process, and the fiber itself is free from chemical contamination. Tencel has impressive performance characteristics when compared to modal, viscose, cotton, and polyester fibers. The outstanding tenacity of the fiber is passed along to the yarns and fabrics made of Tencel or Tencel blends. One problem with the fiber, however, is poor abrasion resistance. Marketing efforts for Tencel will concentrate on the industrialized countries. Production is concentrated at Grimsby, England, but new plants in North America are planned.
