A theoretical model was developed to describe the kinetics of polyester fiber dissolution in alkaline solutions. The model was based on the surface reaction concept. The rate of dissolution was considered to be proportional to the fiber surface area and the concentration of hydroxyl ions. Weight loss was not a simple linear function of time. Kinetics was characterized by a rate constant that was independent of the content of hydroxyl ions, fiber, and water. Experiments performed with polyethlylene terephthalate and aqueous sodium hydroxide at 100 degrees centigrade showed that the reaction was first order relative to surface and hydroxyl ions.14 refs.
