Studies on water treatment, specifically with regard to silk reeling, have shown that water characteristics, such as pH and alkalinity, affect the quality of raw silk. The alkalinity of the water affects the amount of time needed to soften the sericin before extracting filaments from the cocoon. Various treatments must be applied to silk reeling water to reduce hardness and to impart alkalinity. Demineralization, whereby the cations and anions of dissolved substances are removed, and the addition of bicarbonates, carbonates, and hydroxides are the most efficient methods. When pH and alkalinity are correct, the cocoon's boiling time is reduced. Mixing demineralized water with raw water yields the best results for reeling. 11 refs.
