Acrylic fibers produce fabrics with good dyeability and a soft hand, but insufficient wet heat resistance to withstand pressing. Asahi Chemical has attempted to modify the polymer structure of acrylic fibers to improve their abrasion resistance and wet heat resistance. The resultant modified fibers are suitable for woven fabrics. The company has been studying the thermodynamics of acrylic polymer solutions since the 1960s. Asahi's efforts have resulted in two new types of acrylic fibers: SPLA, which has a soft hand and excellent transparency, and NONBUR, which has flameproof properties. 2 refs.
