Kemira Fibers has introduced Visil, a cellulose-based silica fiber that has the feel and appearance of viscose, but is highly fire-retardant and generates no toxic fumes when combusted. The fiber can be used alone or in blends for furnishing fabrics, protective apparel, and heat insulation products. kemira developed the inherently fire-retardant Visil in conjunction with Abo Akadami and the Technical Research Center of Finiand. Visil has a soft, cotton-wool-like hand and can be bleached or dyed by modified conventional methods. Since Visil, which is composed only of cellulose and polysilicic acid, contains chemically bound water, it tends to scorch rather than flame when ignited. Visil is being evaluated by Camborne Fabrics, Europe's largest office furnishings manufacturer.
