New flax and hemp varieties have improved fiber spinnability, enabling the manufacture of yarns for apparel using universal spinning systems. The natural fiber industry has produced linen/hemp yarns of quality sufficient for knit and woven apparel fabrics. Woven hemp apparel is growing in popularity in Europe. One hundred percent linen and blended linen knit apparel provides very fast moisture wicking away from the skin to the apparel surface and the lowest abailable amount of water condensation in the apparel during wear. Knit linen apparel does not crease and can be worn after laundering without ironing. Adjustments in blend composition or fabric structure provide thermal insulation properties suitable for diverse climates. Novel 100 percent linen blend knit bedding provides excellent hydrophilic properties and breathability. 12 refs.
