A study investigated flax and hemp fiber processing modifications that improve their aesthetic, comfort, and environmental properties. Modifications included such agronomic measures as variety selection; altered sowing dates, densities, and harvesting times; and various nitrogen doses. Growers allowed the straw to remain in the field until it was slightly overretted to produce a more delicate fiber. Special simulators influenced the speed of this process. Alternatively, raw nonretted straw was harvested and processed into a decorticated fiber, enzymatically treated, and steam explosion processed to impart properties similar to those of retted fibers. The fibers are suitable for the manufacture of knitting and weaving yarns blended with wool, cotton, and manmade fibers. 6 refs.
