Natural materials made from agro-cellulosic renewable resources are gaining importance in nontextile and nonpaper applications due to their ecological and economic advantages over oil based polymers. Raw material sources include bast or stem fibers (flax, jute, and ramie), seed fibers (cotton and kapok), leaf fibers (sisal and palm), and fruit fibers (coconut and others). Successful manufacture of plant fiber products usually requires such physical and chemical treatments as refining, fibrillation, impregnation, coating, crosslinking, grafting, or derivatizing. Such novel fiber extraction techniques as steam explosion and extrusion produce uniform and high quality plant fibers for technical applications. Potential markets for nonwoven fabrics based on plant fibers include absorbents, geotextiles, fillers, and reinforcement materials. 7 refs.
