Researchers blended chitosan or potato strach as a biodegradable filler with the oligomeric matrix of a nonbiodegradable unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) or oligo(methyl methacrylate) (OMMA), Polimal 194-3, followed by polymerization of the matrix, which yielded composites containing up to 15 percent chitosan or up to 40 percent starch. Blending occurred at 20 degrees centigrade. Polymerization of OMMA and UPR occurred by ultraviolet radiation (0.5 h) and by benzoyl peroxide (2 percent, 60 degree centigrade, 4 h). Sample films 20-50 microns thick were prepared. The composites were heterogeneous with numerous starch grain inclusions. An increase in biodegradable filler content decreased the breaking strength and modulus of elasticity. Photohardening of the composite, however, resulted in an increase in breaking strength and modulus of elasticity. 6 refs.
