Future developments in textile wet processing machinery will focus on its environmental impact. The dissolution of wood pulp for the production of viscose fiber will be achieved via organic solvents. Courtaulds' new technology for solvent dissolution of wood pulp allows regeneration of cellulosic fiber waste into a new type of fiber. The technique eliminates the environmentally harmful emissions typical of conventionally regenerated cellulosic fiber manufacture. Proper care must also be taken when selecting plasticizers, spin finishes, and other fiber modifying chemicals for melt extrusion. A key problem challenging the dyeing industry is the amount and type of effluent from dyeing polyester and polypropylene fibers. Researchers are currently investigating bilobal and trilobal fibers in which two or more different fibers are fused to obtain the desired level of dyeability and lower processing costs. 3 refs.
