Forensic and textile scientists conduct scanning electron microscopic (SEM) analysis of fiber and yarn damage to create records for evidence, identify fiber or yarn features associated with different sources of damage, and report the results of controlled experimentation with known sources of textile damage. At present, no established protocol exists for identifying the source of textile damage by observation of fiber end morphology. Experiments conducted by Stowell and Card (1990) and Pelton and Ukpabi (1995) were instrumental in beginning to establish an SEM database for forensic textile applications. Scientists have viewed damaged fiber features using SEM but have not presented courts with sufficient documentation about the range of features to be expected.
