A review of thermal analysis explains the techniques involved, applications, and examples. According to DIN 51005, thermal analysis measures physical and chemical properties of a substance, a mixture of substances, or mixtures as a function of time and temperature. Thermal analysis techniques include thermal gravimetry, offerential scanning calorimetry, dilatometry, thermal microscopy, and thermal mechanical analysis. A controlled temperature program is central to all techniques. An example of the application of thermal gravimetry is the determination of the drying and annealing of a salt used for yarn preparation in weaving. An example of the application of differential scanning calorimetry is the identification of the polymer type used in the garter of a compression stocking.
