Existing glove standards balance protection from such hazards as chemicals, bloodborne pathogens, and high heat against glove hand function. Standardized tests evaluate wearer dexterity, tactility, and grip. However, these tests have not been successfully applied to improve glove design. The tests fail to discriminate variations in glove factors that affect hand motion, primarily because the tests measure human subject coordination as much as they do hand function. Researchers have developed a more thorough, step-by-step approach for selecting and qualifying hand function tests that better links field performance of gloves to human factors.
