The textile industry accounts for 68 percent of Pakistan's exports and 8.5 percent of its gross domestic product. It supplies 1.9 percent of the world textile market and is generally considered a supplier of standard or commodity products with limited range and lower than average quality, Although it has ample supplies of raw cotton and low cost labor, the Pakistani textile industry has not successfully exploited its market potential. Its exports have stagnated during the past three years and it is underutilizing its capacity. The country must develop its fabric finishing and apparel manufacturing industries and increase its value adding capacity to become more competitive internationally.
