The last installment in a series of three articles on the current and potential applications of biotechnology in the textile industry focuses on effluent treatment, the use of DNA and monoclonal antibodies in the identification of textile materials, and textile applications in biotechnology. Biotechnology in effluent treatment includes biological oxygen demand reduction, which is in the process of commercialization and optimization; odor elimination, which is under short term development; and metal and toxic materials elimination, which is under medium term development. The use of DNA and monoclonal antibodies in the identification of textile materials can assist in fraud cases. Textile applications in biotechnology include supports for cells and enzymes, biosensors, and external medical devices. 21 refs.
