Recycled fibers create dewatering problems and contaminate paper machine clothing fabrics with such materials as fillers, sizes, dyes, plastics, adhesives, and waxes. Process optimization, such as removing tailings, separate stock preparation, and cautious use of recycled water, help minimize contaminants. General fabric cleaning consists of a mechanical approach supplemented by chemical cleaning and conditioning. Energy showers, heat, and brush cleaning are effective in removing stickies and short, nonhydrated fibers from clothing fabrics. Flooded nip showers, wash roll showers, and oscillating needle jet showers effectively remove void filling contaminants from forming fabrics. Coating the fabric with a water soluble barrier prevents some contamination, and a batch wash method removes stickies from fabrics. Press fabrics and dryer fabrics also require specialized cleaning techniques to remove contaminants. 12 refs.
