Despite interruptions to the stability of cotton trade resulting from policy changes in major exporting countries, international cotton trade increased steadily from 4.4 million metric tons in 1980-1981 to nearly 6 million tons in 1997-1998. The position of the People's Republic of China changed significantly, reflecting the imbalance in domestic supply and demand conditions. Higher production levels increased the market share of such major exporters as Francophone Africa, Australia, Argentina, Paraguay, Greece, and Syria. Despite a declining trend in imports from such importing countries as Japan, Germany, and France, imports increased to such developing countries as Indonesia. Thailand, Mexico, and Brazil. The rapid growth of domestic consumption in such cotton producing countries as Pakistan, India, and Turkey led to a decrease in raw cotton exports but proportional growth in textile exports. 7 refs.
