Outlook for the World Cotton Market in the 1998/99 Crop Year

World cotton production decreased by less than 1 percent in 1996 and 1997. Consumption remained steady at approximately 88.6 million bales. Regional shifts in demand reduced capacity utilization to 30 percent in Indonesia, decreased Japanese consumption by 10.7 percent, and increased cotton consumption in Mexico by 32.3 percent. For 1998-1999, world planted acreage was expected to decrease 1-5 percent. Reductions in acreage were expected in the United States, the People's Republic of China, Argentina, India, and Brazil. The ICAC forecast world 1998-1999 yield to be 512 pounds per acre, the same as in 1997. The same organization forecast a reduction of 4 percent in world production to 87.1 million bales.
