The United States textile industry has undergone significant changes since the mid 1980s. Researchers used monthly and quarterly data to analyze factors influencing the mill consumption of cotton fiber from 1987-1997. Aggregate mill consumption of cotton fiber was modeled as a function of the prices of cotton and manufactured fiber, yarn, and fabric prices, and measure of technology adoption. Researchers estimated pricing models that contained yarn prices as monthly output prices for October 1987 October 1997 and that contained fabric prices as quarterly output prices October 1987 to April 1996. Results demonstrated that, for the yarn model, mill cotton fiber consumption related closely to the price of yarn used for apparel end uses but not to fiber price. Results for the fabric model indicated that mill fiber consumption was related to the price of polyester fiber and to the price of blended print cloth used for apparel end uses. Mill fiber consumption was not significantly related to cotton fiber price. 31 refs.
