Researchers analyzed price elasticity in cotton demand at the mill level and the role of polyester as a substitute for cotton. The study entailed review of retail market data, mill consumption behavior, and price information concerning both cotton and polyester. Results revealed no significant relationship between retail market share, mill consumption, and price for either cotton or polyester. Moreover, a decline in cotton consumption did not necessarily lead to greater consumption of polyester. Researchers concluded that factors other than price drive cotton and polyester demand. If changes in prices do not cause a shift between fibers, the profit margins at the mill level become more volatile. That polyester and cotton prices tend to move together tentatively suggests that the two fibers can serve as substitutes for one another. 4 refs.
