The ozone sensitivity of Pima cotton currently grown in the San Joaquin Valley was investigated. The ozone sensitivity of the Pima was compared to that of Acala varieties. Pima cotton was more sensitive to ozone than Acala cottons. Leaf senescence, gas exchange behavior, yield, and fiber quality were all more affected in Pima than than in Acala. The yield of Pima was reduced to nearly zero under ozone conditions that have been previously observed in the San Joaquin Valley. Successful cultivation of Pima in California may be associated with the low air pollution conditions that have prevailed during the last few years. Current efforts to select ozone resistant varieties may be critical to continued Pima production in California. 11 refs.
