A high-mo dulus, high-strength carbon fiber based on polyacrylonitrile was prepared by heat treatment and boronizing at 2800 degrees Centigrade. The heat treatments consisted of oxidation, carbonization, and/or graphitization. Dynamic elastic modulus and strength in extension were measured. The optimal heat treatment was preliminary carbonization at a temperature of between 1100 and 1500 degrees Centigrade. Because boron was dissolved in the caron fiber lattice, its effect on the fiber's structure and properties were examined. Boron was present either between the carbon layers or as a replacement for a carbon atom. 2 refs.
