United States consumption of ethylene for commodity plastics in 1998 totalled 23.6 billion kilograms. Processing industries are exploring new methods of transforming abundant, inexpensive feed materials into higher value fuels and chemicals. Recent research involved the development of a reactor that would allow a single-stage synthesis of syngas, alkenes, and oxygenated products. As much as 70 percent of ethane converted from an ethane, oxygen, and hydrogen feed (at a ratio of 2:1:2) in 10(-3) seconds at 950 degrees centigrade. Hydrogen added to the ethane and air mixture over a platinum and tin catalyst appeared to increase ethane selectivity to a high of 85 percent and suppress carbon oxidation reactions as low as 5 percent. Large scale ethylene synthesis in a pilot plant would require solutions to materials and process safety problems, because the hydrogen mixture may be explosive. 5 refs.
