A reaction of gamma-butyrolactone (BL) with diols in the presence of acidic catalyst under reflux in xylene yielded polyester ethers. Researchers attempted to correlate the molecular weight of the resultant polyester ethers with such polymerization conditions as the amount of activated clay and starting glycol components. Reaction conditions were established to obtain the high molecular weight polyester ethers. BL polymerized with ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol by refluxing in xylene with various amounts of activated clay. The assumed intermediate in the polymerization, 2-hydroxethyl-4-hydroxybutyrate, also polymerized under similar conditions. The resultant polymer consisted of a single repeating unit, indicating that 2-hydroxyethyl-4-hydroxybutyrate was the intermediate in this polymerization. Polyurethanes were prepared from these polyester ethers and evaluated for their elasticity. 9 refs.
