Researchers observed a marked solvent effect on initiator-free photo-graft polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The order of solvent for increasing grafting was the same as the order of swelling of collagen: methanol > ethanol > n-propanol > acetone = toluene. Polymerization of n-butyl methacrylate (BMA), 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate (HEMA), styrene, and vinyl acetate carried out in methanol yielded good graft polymers of the carried out in methanol yielded good graft polymers of the respective monomers, except for vinyl acetate. Removal of the collagen from the grafted films resulted in the polymer films. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed porous structures, except for polystyrene. SEM and viscoelastic properties of the grafted films indicated that the respective polymers dispersed finely in collagen. The grafted films are thought to be good biocompatible materials. 10 refs.
