Spin-Label Investigation of the Dynamic Behavior of Stearic Acid Additives in Poly(vinyl chloride)

An experiment added three kinds of spin label compounds having a DOXYL-radical substituent at different positions on the hydrocarbon chain of stearic acid to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) with dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as plasticizer. ESR measurements determined the order parameter (S) of each radical in the PVC resin. An increase in the quantity of DOP added to the PVC decreased the value of S, which is a parameter of the dynamic state of spin label compounds in PVC. An increase in temperature also decreased the value of S. A decrease in S may be the addition of DOP and the increase in temperature. An in density and glass transition temperature of the PVC resin decreased the temperature of the order parameter T(s 1/2) for each radical. 31 refs.
