A better preparation of graft copolymers would combine free radicals displaying high selectivity in the abstraction reaction along with radicals that can act as growth moderators during grafting to reduce termination by coupling. Researchers employed stepwise growth moderated by reversible termination in the preparation of polydiene based graft copolymers involving the functionalization of butadiene polymers and copolymers by diphenylmethyl (DPM)-type free radicals. DPM did not exhibit selectivity toward the attack on 1,2-units or 1,4-units in polybutadiene. DPM randomly attacked the backbone in a similar manner to the in situ formation of polybutadienyl radical through peroxy free radicals. Functionalization reactions of this type enabled the homogeneous preparation of stable macroinitiators bearing three to five functional groups. Their use in graft polymerization produced clear materials with excellent dispersion of the polydiene phase. 5 refs.
