Centrifugal force devolatilizers remove volatiles from vinyl aromatic polymers. Using centrifugal force devolatilization in an anionic polymerization process produces polymers monomer, solvent, and initiator phlegmatizer. Vinyl aromatic monomers suitable for this process include styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, all isomers of vinyl toluene (especially para-vinyltoluene), all isomers of vinyl toluene (especially para-vinyltoluene), all isomers of ethyl styrene, propyl styrene, vinyl biphenyl, vinyl naphthalene, vinyl anthracene, and blends of these components. Volatile components removable via this process include ethylbenzene, methylcyclopentane, methylcyclohexane, cyclohexane, benzene, tetrahydrofuran, and unreacted monomers and initiator phlegmatizers.
