Conventional anionic polymerization processes for styrene use alkali metal alkyl initiators in the presence of an alkyl or aryl metal polymerization regulator to moderate the rate of anionic chain growth to control the molecular weight and polymerization temperature and optimize efficiency. A novel process increases efficiency by using an unsymmetrical alkyl or aryl metal, an alkyl or aryl mixed metal, or a salt derived for those components as a regulator. A rate regulator molar ratio of 0.8:1-30:1 relative to the amount of initiator is optimal. The rate regulators do not act as initiators by themselves. Polymerization initiates and proceeds via their combination with alkali metal compounds. Upon attainment of the specific molecular weight, the living polymer ends can be reacted with chain termination or coupling agents.
