A New Preparation Method for Porous Titanium Trichloride

Researchers established a method for preparing a high performance porous titanium trichloride catalyst for propylene polymerization. Reduction of titanium tetrachloride with a concentrated alkylaluminum compound yielded alpha-titanium trichloride. A highly active porous titanium trichloride catalyst was obtained from the mixture of dibutyl ether and hexachloroethane. This catalyst showed 15 percent higher activity than did a conventional porous titanium trichloride catalyst. During treatment of the mixture, the crystalline structure would be transformed from an alpha form to a delta form by action of the chlorine radical. The stability and amount of chlorine radical are important to obtain a highly active catalyst. 7 refs.
