Techtextil Report: Growth through Innovation.

At the Techtextil Symposium held in Frankfurt, Germany, in April 1999, industry analysts discussed the need for raw material suppliers to capitalize on the availability of advanced technologies that facilitate the manufacture of high performance products for more sophisticated end uses in sectors with higher profit margins. Although high performance technical textiles are used principally in the industrial sector, their applications in athletic apparel, sportswear, and outdoor protective clothing are increasing. Concerns of the industry include consolidations between textile and raw materials manufacturers that could encourage the new, larger companies to adopt short term strategies of competing on market price rather than investing in research and development. Developments in technical textiles include breathable laminates, flame resistant nonwoven fabrics, super light weight insulation, and modified lyocell.
