Incrases in the price and delivery time of titanium dioxide (TiO(2)) have rekindled interest in white mineral fillers that serve as partial TiO(2) replacements. The two most important properties for TiO(2) replacements are opacity and whiteness. Fine ground calcium carbonate and calcined kaolin clays are the most popular TiO(2) extenders because of their low price (60-90 percent lower than the price of rutile TiO(2)). A masterbatch of 45 percent TiO(2), 30 percent calcium carbonate, and 25 percent polyolefin results in cost savings of 15 percent. Engelhard Corporation's ASP 170 fine particle hydrous kaolin provides effective spacing of TiO(2) particles for excellent color and opacity retention. Its Ultrex 96 calcined kaolin has the highest brightenss of any kaolin based extender. Other alternative extenders include lower grade anatase TiO(2), lithophone, technical grade zinc oxide, and barium sulfate.
