Du Pont announced plans to construct a $40 million development facility to evaluate the use of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO(2)) as a reaction solvent for the manufacture of its Teflon fluoropolymers. Heated to temperatures above 31 degrees centigrade and pressures above 73.8 bar, supercritical CO(2) possesses both gas-like and liquid-like properties. The method replaces organic solvents for the removal of active substances from natural products, which reduces regulatory and environmental concerns. Pharmaceutical companies are currently important customers for supercritical CO(2) extraction processes, as are manufacturers of medical grade polymers.
