Mature commodity products with low growth and profit margins characterize the textile industry. The challenge for the 21st century involves industry revitalization through technological innovations in products and manufacturing. Biological processes are inherently flexible and should provide intermediates and polymers that are more compatible with the ecosystem. Process redesigns will reduce waste and recycle sidestreams. Biodegradable fibers will become increasingly important. Biocompatible dyes, such as Du Pont's environmentally benign Tactel Colorsafe, may become industry standards. Manufacturing technologies will improve due to competition for quality and process efficiency. Engineered multifunctional textiles, such as Du Pont's Coolmax fabrics, represent third generation textiles. Computer simulation techniques will integrate the structure and composition of natural fibers to develop biopolymer analogs.
