Consumer demand for more environmentally friendly products has generated a new awareness of ecological issues on the part of fiber and fabric manufacturers. Currently, 25 mills, including Milliken, Dan River, Dixie Yarns, and Collins & Aikman, have become active in the American Textile Manufacturers Institute's Environmental Excellence program. With regard to cotton, Cotton Incorporated has become a leader. A three-pronged strategy to make cotton growing and fiber and fabric production more environmentally friendly includes biotechnology ad seed genetics, new organic farming techniques, and new dyeing, finishing, mill, and manufacturing processes that will produce chemical-free fibers and fabrics. According to Nicholas Hahn, president of Cotton Incorporated, the cotton industry's Achilles Heel is its use of chemicals to protect and produce cotton crops.
