Researchers conducted histological examinations to determine the origins of seed coat fragments (SCFs), studied SCF development during spinning, and described the differences in SCF content in the lint of several cotton varieties. Analysis of ten varieties of Gossypium hirsutum L. from various geographic regions indicated that SCFs in raw fibers consist of the external epidermis and part of the external mesophyll and its vessel bundles. During spinning, the carding machine and the drawing machine remove nearly all of the mesophyll. The opening roller of rotor spinning machines breaks the largest SCFs into smaller pieces that remain bound by their attached fibers. Intervarietal differences in SCF content were attributable to fiber foot constriction, stomati, and compactness of external mesophyll. 4 refs.
