Quantitative characterization of variations among fiber quality properties associated with cotton ovule development is crucial to the improvement of cotton production processes. Researchers grew NuCotn 33B under rainfed and irrigated conditions in Mississippi, hand harvested the cotton, weighted both mote ovules and seeds, manually ginned the fiber, analyzed the advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS) fiber properties of each weight category, and statistically compared and combined the data from each category using SAS statistical software. Properties of short fiber motes differed from other fiber properties occurring within a field. Micron AFIS calculations indicated that motes are good for reducing certain micronaire bale averages at the classing office but still contribute to defects at the mill. Abstract. 5 refs.
