Researchers used different seed coat fragment (SCF) detection and counting methods to investigate the effects of SCF on cotton yarn quality. An experiment spun 15 nonsticky cottons into ring spun or open end spun yarns of 20 tex. Analyses of trash content and yarn imperfections indicated that SCFs were the main source of neps for nonsticky cotton in both yarn types. The impact of SCFs was greater on ring spun yarns than on open end spun yarns due to the fragmentation and elimination of SCFs by the opening machine. SCFs also induced thick places in the yarn. Researchers are currently examining the kinds of imperfections and mechanisms of structural perturbation resulting from SCFs in the yarn. 5 refs.
