Image Processing for Stripper Harvested Cotton Trash Content Measurement -- A Progress Report.

The USDA-ARS Cotton Production and Processing Research Unit initiated a study to provide the basis for obtaining online information on gin trash content and component type from stripper harvested cotton. This information assists in the optimization of ginning machinery. The study connected a kodak trilinear array color CCD line scan imager to a personal computer in a laboratory. The high levels of trash required an 8 X 10 inch viewing area. Images of seed cotton taken from different stages in he preginning cleaning process were obtained without pressing the samples against glass plates, increasing the opportunities for image acquisition. Algorithms differentiated between seed cotton, the different trash component types, and the background. When the components were identified, an algorithm determined the level of each component (sticks, burrs, and leaves).11 refs.
