Assessment of Cotton Fibre Fineness & maturity by Improved Version of Statex-Finemat & Uster-AFIS.

Researchers used united States Department of Agriculture and CIRCOT calibration cotton to test fineness and maturity as measured by the Statex-Finemat, Uster Advanced Fiber Information System (AFIS), and Shirley FMT and compared the results of the three instruments. The Statex-Finemat system uses the double compression method with a sensor and special software to predict the degree of fiber wall thickness and fineness and maturity prarmeters. The AFIS uses an optical measuring system to assess the degree of wall thickening. Fineness measurements showed a high correlation among all three instruments. The maturity values estimated by the Finemat and AFIS systems showed the same shape curve, whereas the Shirley system showed a differently shaped curve. The maturity ratio curves generated by the Finemat and AFIS system correlated well, although the AFIS values were slightly higher than the Finemat values. 4 refs.
