Cellulosic fibres made in the direct dissolution of wood-pulp in an organic solvent are known generically as lyocell fibres. Courtaulds Lyocell is the brand covering fibre types developed for technical markets such as nonwovens, special papers and technical textiles. The paper reviews the development of applications in each of these sectors. With increasing production capacity, Courtaulds Lyocell will begin to make in roads into markets currently dominated by other types of fibres.
